Diabetes UK

Diabetes is hard. Hard to explain. Hard to manage.
Hard to live with. We’re here to make it easier.

More people have diabetes than ever before, not only that but the number of people experiencing complications or dying because of diabetes is growing.

As the UK’s leading diabetes charity, they strive to tackle the challenges people face by providing information, advice and most importantly support to those with all types of diabetes, enabling them to learn to live well in their condition.

Since 1996, the number of people with diabetes in the UK has more than doubled from 1.4 million to 3.8 million. If nothing changes, by 2025 five million of us will have diabetes. Diabetes is the fastest growing health threat of our times and an urgent public health issue.

Type 1 – Develops when the insulin-producing cells in the body have been destroyed and the body is not able to produce insulin. Type 1 diabetes is treated by injecting insulin or using an insulin pump.

Type 2 – Develops when the body makes some insulin but not able to properly work or there isn’t enough of it. Some mange with a healthy diet, physical activities and if needed by losing weight. But the longer you have it the more likely you will need medication.

Diabetes is far more serious than people think and can have a life-limiting or life-threatening impact on your health if it’s not managed well. It can make you go blind or lose a limb, cause your kidneys to fail or trigger a heart attack or stroke. In the worst cases, it can kill you.

Which charities can I support?

Donations can be made to any national/local charity or recognised good cause such as schools and scout groups.

You might choose to donate to BT’s own charitable initiative, the BT Supporters’ Club, which seeks to transform the lives of young people through sport. Or you could choose to support one of our charity partners; Comic Relief, BBC Children in Need, ChildLine or Disasters Emergency Committee. Some people choose to support local causes like churches, hospices, schools or animal welfare schemes. Whatever charity you choose to support will receive more money through Payroll Giving than if you were to donate to them directly.

You can nominate more than one charity to benefit from your donations - and you can easily change the amount or nominated charities at any time.  If your chosen charity is not listed on this site you can still support them but please include the charity number so there is no delay in forwarding on your donation.  If there is a charity not listed that you would like to see here please email [email protected]
