Purple Pounds is the payroll giving scheme for The University of Manchester. As a member of University staff, Purple Pounds is a fantastic way for you to support the causes you care about most. 

You can support any UK registered charity with a donation through your pay. A £5 donation costs most taxpayers just £4.

Your donations are more important than ever

During these unprecedented times charities are even more reliant on regular donations via Payroll Giving. Purple Pounds is the easiest way to support the causes you care about. And the best part is, it’s completely tax-free. Get started by choosing the cause that you’d like to support at the bottom right of this page. 

What are the benefits?

Not only is Purple Pounds simple, but it's also tax effective. This is because your donation is made before tax is deducted from your pay. For example, if you donate £5, the take-home cost to standard taxpayers is just £4. And if you’re a higher-rate taxpayer, you’ll save even more. 

What if I change my mind?

If you have set up a regular donation you can select 'cancel all donations', 'replace all existing donations' or 'please add to my existing donations' from the donation form.

How much will my donation cost out of my take-home pay?

You donate   You pay
Cost to you as a 20% tax rate payer 
Cost to you as a 40% tax rate payer 
Cost to you as a 45% tax rate payer 

Many employers cover the small admin charge of 25p but if not this will be deducted from your donation.

Which charities can I support?

Donations can be made to any UK registered national/local charity or recognised good cause – including places of worship, schools, and foodbanks.

You can nominate more than one charity to benefit from your donations, and you can easily change the amount or nominated causes at any time. 

If your chosen cause is not listed on this site, you can still support them. Just make sure to include their registered charity number so there is no delay in forwarding on your donation.

If you’d like to make a difference close to home, you can choose to support University of Manchester students and research, or donate to Manchester Museum. Just look for 'The University of Manchester' on the drop-down menu when making your donation.
