The Journalists Charity

For more than 150 years, the Journalists’ Charity has taken great pride in helping journalists and their families who find themselves in very unfortunate circumstances.

We provide grants to address a multitude of personal issues including illness, mental health problems, loss of employment, loss of benefits and homelessness.

In recent years, we have seen a rise in the number of younger people seeking assistance and the charity awards between £400,000 and £500,000 in grants per annum.

The charity also operates a sheltered housing complex at Dorking, Surrey - a mix of 23 apartments and bungalows.

We aim to help to as wide a range of journalists and their families as possible and we do this due to the support we get from journalists who become members of the charity.

Becoming a member for as little as £3 per month means that, in addition to helping those in need, journalists can help develop their own careers through our networking and fund-raising events – something younger journalists find particularly useful.

Our events include:

Fund-raising lunches across the UK attended by leading figures in public life and journalism.

Press balls in Glasgow and London (in association with the London Press Club)

Invitations and discounted tickets to other organisations’ events such as Women in Journalism and the Media Society.

Invitations to film screenings.

Media Awards ceremonies.

Your agreement to help the Charity with a monthly contribution will also enrol you as a member and you may choose to receive newsletters and invitations to the special events and networking opportunities mentioned here. You may, of course, opt out at any time.
