Our vision

Strathcarron Hospice is here today for and because of the people of Forth Valley, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth. Every year, we provide care and support to over 1,400 people with a life-limiting illness or condition, at a time when both they and their family need it most. Our philosophy is about living until you die and we ensure people have every opportunity to achieve their goals right up until the last moment. Strathcarron is an independent hospice and all of our care is provided free of charge. Our services include a 24-bed inpatient unit, Day Care, Hospice@Home, Community Nurse Specialists, Lymphoedema Clinic. We need to raise over £14,315 a day to keep these services running.

What We Do

What We Do

We provide specialist palliative care and expert end of life care for the people of Forth Valley, Cumbernauld and Kilsyth. We care for people with illnesses that cannot be cured including cancer, lung, heart or kidney failure and a range of non-malignant and neurological diseases. We are also actively involved in research and education in palliative care and we promote and influence the delivery of palliative care locally and beyond.
Funding

Funding

We are a charity and all our services are provided free of charge. Strathcarron Hospice now employs over 200 people and our services cost over £8.5 million each year. About 38% of our running costs are funded by NHS Forth Valley & NHS North Lanarkshire. The rest we have to find for ourselves. We only exist due to the extraordinary generosity of the individuals and communities we serve. Every day of the year we need to raise over £14,315 just to keep our existing services running. Please support us in any way you can.

History

History

On 21st April 1981 Strathcarron Hospice opened its doors to admit our first patient. The idea of a hospice and its planning started back in 1975 when Dr Harold Lyon met with a few friends to consider whether their vision of a hospice was achievable. They identified a number of principles that still hold true: good symptom control; good communication and openness between the patient, family and staff; reassurance to reduce fear and anxiety; spiritual help and an environment that is homely, friendly and relaxed. From opening in a converted dining room and billiard room, over the years the Hospice has expanded to include a purpose built 24 bedded Inpatient unit. In its first year Strathcarron Hospice spent £79,776 and looked after 40-50 patients across all its services: today we spend over £8.5 million and look after nearly 1,400 patients with 80% of our work outside the Hospice building.
